Irinjalakuda is undoubtedly one of the most scenic towns in Kerala. What makes the days of Utsavam special is the unique Kathakali performances in Irinjalakuda Koodalmanikyam Temple during the Utsavam days. Carrying over years of unbroken tradition. The venue have honoured many legendary artists in Kathakali. The performance is scheduled late at night and continues till early morning. At morning I happened to realize how beautiful is the aesthetics of the architecture. The first rays of the rising sun made it an amazing experience.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Koodalmanikyam Utsavam 2014 has began followed by the Mridangamela organized by Korambu Vikraman Namboodiri. Mridangamela had been an integral part of Koodalmanikyam Utsavam for decades. Usually the mela comprises of creating a symphony using mridangas and other drums to add variance. The artists are aged from 4-30. These artists have honoured venues all over India and abroad. Mridangamela have also been presented before dignitaries such as K Jayachandran, Ministers of the State, Dr. K. J. Yesudas and so on.<br />
<br />
However it is hard to come across Mridangamela in the official circular of events due to adamant attitude of authorities and ignorance of shortsighted social leaders of Irinjalakuda. Mridangamela evolved as a struggle of Korambu Subrahmaniyan Namboodiri following the adamant attitude of authorities in charge of the temple who were keen to ignore this divine art. At a point the authorities shut their eyes towards the dreams and dedication of the young talent as young as age 4 who were born in Irinjalakuda. The young ones were denied a stage to perform before their beloved Lord Sangameshwara.<br />
<br />
Koramb Subhramaniyan Namboodiri took a stand and fought for the dreams of young ones who practiced Mridanga day in and out. The brave Maestro did not back out from his dedication to Lord Sangameshwara, he organized the Mridangamela before the Lord himself and overcame every resistance the authorities put forward all by the divine blessings of Lord Sangameshwara. Till day Mridangamela is carried out each year without fail by the successors of Korambu Subrahmaniyan Namboodiri. The symphony was performed before a huge crowd and is regarded as one of the highlights of Kodiyettam.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Back in the days, Kerala was altogether a different place. The days when there were much lesser drunkards and traffic. The days where evening meant to be the time children went out to play. Elephants are still etched in our fond memories. Colourful festivals that bring the warmth of ages that have gone by. We cannot forget the picture of the elephants that came as soon as it is festive time. Along the elephant were men who lived and stayed with elephants. Mahouts devout their life to train and maintain elephants. The Mahouts of older generations tend to work with a single elephant there by forming a bond with the animal similar to their own children. There had been tales about the unbroken bond between elephants and mahouts that still melt the heart of Malayalees. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The tradition had eroded in time and mahouts had been replaced with contract workers who were not experts nor have the bond with the elephant. Mahouts not only maintained the elephants but were experts in treating the elephants and controlling them in case anything goes wrong. As society loses the bond of affection the probability of error had increased. This could be pointed out for the increasing number of violent incidents involving elephants in the recent past. What we must understand is that elephants are living beings too; unless and until they are treated with love and respect, the clock is ticking.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
James Gregory (November 1638 – October 1675) was a Scottish mathematician and astronomer. He was regarded for his contributions to mathematics and trigonometry. However it took years for the world to realize that what Gregory tried to claim was actually discovered by Madhava of Sangamagrama (c. 1340 – c. 1425). Madhava hailed from the town of Sangamagrama (present day Irinjalakuda) near Thrissur, Kerala, India. Madhava was the first to use infinite series approximations for a range of trigonometric functions. His discoveries opened the doors to what has today come to be known as Mathematical Analysis. Madhava made pioneering contributions to the study of infinite series, calculus, trigonometry, geometry, and algebra. However Irinjalakuda failed to remember Madhava. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />Irinjalakuda is renowned all over the world for the relevance of its role in creating musical geniuses such as Paliyath Jayachandran and Korambu Subhramaniyan Namboodiri. Mridanga, known as <i>deva vadya</i> (drum of Gods) is one among the most ancient drums of India. In any Carnatic music concert, it is the main percussion instrument. Famous Malayalam playback singer, Jayachandran initiated his journey into music through Mridangam. He was a disciple of the legendary Korambu Subrahmanian Namboodiri. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The famous ‘Korambu Mridanga Kalari’ of Irinjalakuda, has the credit of introducing mridangamela to the world of music. A performance comprising of artists as young as 5 years old creating symphony in unison using mridanga had stunned audience around the world. Mridanga artists from Irinjalakuda honoured venues across Japan, Malaysia, Europe and Middle East during the past decade. According to Vikraman Namboodiri, the bond with mridanga is more of an eternal bond sanctified by the divinity of music. A bond that is a lifelong commitment. Vikraman Namboodiri has disciples spread over 11 nations and has taught over two thousand students during the past two decades. All Irinjalakuda can hope is that may this unsung genius escape from the fate Madhava had suffered from the minds of under-educated authorities and self obsessed people of Irinjalakuda.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Fr. Pious Chittilappilly</td></tr>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Once in a while when society is about to lose faith in itself comes a life, which reinforces the fact that the best prayer that we could offer to the lord is a meaningful life. Fr. Pious Chittilapilly’s life was his prayer to the lord. A purposeful life understanding that everlasting love of god and service to the world are the greatest gifts a life can leave behind. Not only he could serve the mankind better, his deeds kindled the seeds of faith and holiness in lives touched by his actions. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He was a glaring example of simplicity and how a life could give so much to the society. As true servant of god, his actions were beyond man-made barriers in the society. In his purposeful life he mentored, served and loved lives beyond caste, creed, religion and distance. Only a true human being can see the humanity within the world around him. He offered advice and brought many people to the path that made their life meaningful. Even during days when he was suffering from cancer he always had a cheerful smile to share and words of god that could lighten lives even at the darkest moments. He overcame his pain through sacrifice and service to humanity. He never wished his actions to be thanked for or sought for publicity. But he wished the world to transform and smile as a result of his gestures of kindness. His life was the greatest message he left behind. In a world struggling with narrow minded thoughts and actions, he stood apart. He always had a gift to share or a sweet to share with those who came across him. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One thing that he closely observed was the lives of people around him. He read the minds on the ones in need and gave a helping hand even without being asked for. He served the young and old alike. Armed with unwavering faith in God, he was able to touch lives far and wide. St. Francis of Assisi has said, “All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.” Similarly the life and message of Fr. Pious Chittilappilly will be a guiding light for lives that had been touched by the divine light he had reflect over the years. </div>

Once regarded as a prestigious form of art and music, Kathakali have etched its space in the tradition and culture of Kerala. Currently this form of art is facing the threat of extinction since the number of students dwindled and performance of this art form is limited to just a few venues all across the state.</span></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Future Awaits</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Election is around the corner and sprouts of development are all over Irinjalakuda. With the new hope of development, votes are milked out of the average citizen. Roads are well maintained, water tanks are cleaned and government buildings are repainted. With promises of new development projects, tonnes of concrete awaits to find new home. Is it what this picturesque town really needs? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Not a few years ago the skies of Irinjalakuda was decorated with bright stars. Never anymore. The powerful lights from below overshadow the stars. All one could see is a reflection of the reflection of pollution discharged into the sky. Green fields have made way for concrete structures and temperature have soared many folds. What we need to emphasize is that development is not only about concrete structures. For that we need to have well educated political leaders who are not products of just another faulty education system. What had been the culture of a town is slowly eliminated without concern, replacing it with money minting mechanisms. The saddest part is that the citizens are concerned about justifying what their favourite political parties stands for than the future they will be put to go through.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Not many days from now the roads will be dug again for fresh reasons. Civilians will be forced to attend queues in front of municipal office for fresh issue of cards and policy changes. Even nations in Europe are developed, yet the initial structures and vegetation that define the cities are well maintained. In Singapore even the architecture is pre-defined so as to make the city habitable and to have a positive influence on the lives of individuals that occupy the city. Then the argument comes in that we are not as rich as European Nations. But the fact is that we are a nation that produces billion dollar scams over and over again. So the problem is inherent. Soon the municipality had also learned and Health Department officials tried their luck by sending random letters to individuals in hope of clasping Rs 250 per complaint of depositing garbage on city streets in which most political parties, theaters, hotels and influential groups were exempted. This town has the resources to become the shining example of change before the nation once it cleans up the system and channels its energy to the right direction of change. Let us hope and all we can do is to hope.</div>

Each day of the festival, a Seeveli (procession of caparisoned temple elephants) is held twice, once in the morning and once at night, to the accompaniment of Panchari melam (sacred music). Seventeen elephants take part. Two features of the seeveli are unique to the Koodalmanikyam Temple: first that two baby elephants are included in the procession, one standing on each side of the elephant carrying the deity. Second, while the headdresses ('Netti pattam' in Malayalam) of seven elephants are made of pure gold, the rest are made of pure silver. The last two days of the festival feature Panchavadyam (sacred music from an orchestra of five instruments), and the festival ends at the Thiruvonam asterism.</div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The time is 07:00 PM. The moment when battle music from popular Hollywood films blast through many of the households in Irinjalakuda. Yes it is the time when tele-serials haunt the average household. It has been over 15 years that houses in Kerala are suffering from the intellectual tyranny of tele-serials. Millions hypnotized by the stunning visuals followed by the aggressive background score that emits from the television set. I walked through the roads silently. But all that I could hear was the roar of Malayalam channels. Suddenly I stopped before one house, it was quiet. But then it started. Sarita Nair had mentioned the names. Yes, still haunted under illusions of a different kind. Bless the television.</span></div>

One more festive season draws close. Kerala is thriving in the cheers of festivities. Countdown has begun for the legendary Koodalmanikyam Utsavam of 2014. One after the other utsavams bring joy and prosperity into the minds of Malayalees around the world. As celebrations begin it is time to re-evaluate the conditions of elephants and numerous employees that make these festivities colourful.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The season of Utsavams bring back images of mahouts and elephants. Many things have changed in the way utsavams are conducted over the past few years. But the situation of mahouts still has a long way to go. Many required specialized training and adequate employment standards. Another major concern is the lack of security and medical facilities to ensure safer working environments.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;">Architecture - Koodalmanikyam Temple, Irinjalakuda</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Old buildings always fascinated me. Though falling apart or primitive, they had a charm that could never be explained. These buildings and monuments had something that soothe us and inspire us. It happened that one day I walked among these buildings and ended up among some newly built structures. The wake up call. Among all the newly built houses just a few had made me comfortable and astonished. The remaining buildings had always been a pain to come across. Huge structures made to impress, but one thing in common with these structures were its soul was missing. While I walked among newly built houses in Kerala most of them were identical in their structure and style of construction. Either modeled similar to that of those traditional houses in Kerala or similar to cubic minimalist buildings. But is it just a copy of a copy of a copy that we are looking for or a place to park our heart and call it our home.</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A great problem that the future generations in India will face will be the lack of identity. Diversity is sacrificed and directed towards neutralization and uniformity. Love of beauty is taste. The creation of beauty is art. Art is sacrificed for sake of commercialization. Plants are replaced for artificial decorations that enchant the living rooms. Slowly we are replacing energy with plastic. Engineering have evolved and been constantly advancing over the years. But the tragedy is that a huge portion of these engineers are trained by the institutions to think identical. The patterns of imagination is stunned and the new talent is trained to replicate tried and tested structures so as to reduce cost. In this process of mass duplication the identity of a home is lost to the technological soundness of a prison cell. The modern day buildings of Kerala appear to resemble each other so close that the meaning and identity of the building seems to be at stake. Brilliant and uneducated engineers of the past have made mega structures too. Those were unique and comfortable to live in. I walked into a 70 year old house and felt it was air conditioned even if not, because it was constructed to tap in the flow of air. The difference was that the structures were made to touch your heart and not just your wallet. Is it something these qualified engineers lack or is it something wrong with the system of education? The best message that could be passed down to students will be to preserve your identity in midst of the race towards riches and certifications.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It won't be hard to relate this erosion of class and culture with the system of education we have in place. Trained to compete and take minimum risks to maximize income have led to a civilization devoid of art and richness in culture. May be the lack of this richness could answer the tendency of this era that just know to rape than rather to make love. Slowly we find romance disappearing from art and world alike, replacing the warmth of holding hands and sharing a same dream. With each new house coming up with lack of identity and imagination, a civilization is forced into monotony and into the grips of a copy paste era. With even interiors looking and decorated the same it is a fact that we have even less time to dedicate for our lives. An age when all are busy enough to make a house and lazy enough to make a home out of it depicts the cultural erosion that we are facing. Let there be uniqueness in each brick we place so that we can boast of a home that is imperfect but a sanctuary to evolve our lives from. Let each one's home be their castle to nestle their memories and love.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The architecture of Koodalmanikyam Temple, Irinjalakuda is one of its kind. Unique from most temples in India and a place of unique dimensions. The spacious structure have stood the test of time for over 1200 years or more. The mega structure of the temple has bodies of water situated on each direction. Guarded by walls and citadels and strategic gates that control the flow of crowd. It is a pity that the architectural design of this magnificent monument is much ignored.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The structure also consists a 'Koothambalam' that is getting restructured. This is one of the unique aspects of Koodalmanikyam Temple. Koodalmanikyam is one of the few temples to house a Koothambalam. The main structure was spread over a wide geographic territory. It is documented that Koodalmanikyam Temple owned land in and around Irinjalakuda. Koodalmanikyam temple was generous to donate land to construct Government institutions, colleges and other institutions. However the Temple is much ignored by the administrators and government authorities. There exists a few relevant academic study and research about the past of this iconic landmark.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
A precise academic research about the architecture and history of this temple will not only bring international attention but also support and fund to reconstruct this landmark scientifically. It is just a relevant question that for how long this millennium old structure will be ignored. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The year was 2004, and I was set to leave Irinjalakuda for my higher studies. Back then my pocket money was Rupees 20 per day. It was a luxury back then when you save two or three days of pocket money and venture out shopping. Especially when a Chicken Biriyani was just Rs 35. Yes, India have progressed but what I don't understand is that I don't find these coins around anymore. Shopkeepers are eager to round things up and governments are busy stealing taxpayers hard earned money. There was a day when A Chicken Shawarma cost just Rs 20 in Irinjalakuda and Chilly Chicken was available for Rs 30. A hundred Rupee note in your pocket made you an emperor with minions surrounding you on your way to Bakery. Inflation raised my pocket money from 5 to 20 per day. Still there was hope and money was valuable. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A decade later I got a coin. It was so small that I considered it for a Rupee. To my shock it was nothing but Five precious rupees.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

1) Travel to Kodungalloor on a limited stop bus<br />2) An egg puff and a change of 1 Rupees<br />
3) One Lemon Soda and a Parippuvada<br />
4) 2 Idlis <br />5) 2 Samosa and a Big Babool<br />6) One Lottery Ticket<br />
7) 2 Wills<br />
8) 5 Center Fresh Chewing Gum<br />
9) Balarama<br />
10) 3 Boiled eggs<br />
11) Watch a movie.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Drum of Gods</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mridanga, known as <i>deva vadya</i> (drum of Gods) is one among the most ancient drums of India. In any Carnatic music concert, it is the main percussion instrument. Mridanga owns a prominent place in Hindu sculpture, painting, and mythology. A number of deities including Ganesh and Nandi is depicted with this divine instrument. During Lord Shiva's Thandav, it is documented that Nandi had played the mridanga, that mesmerized and resonated throughout the worlds. The mridangam is considered as "Deva Vaadyam," or "Divine Instrument". </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The mridanga is constructed as a double-sided drum whose body is usually made using a hollowed piece of timber about an inch thick. The two mouths or apertures of the drum are covered with a goatskin and laced to each other with leather straps around the circumference of drum. These straps are put into a state of high tension to stretch out the circular membranes on either side of the hull, allowing them to resonate when struck. These two membranes are dissimilar in width to allow for the production of both bass and treble sounds from the same drum.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Irinjalakuda adorns a significant role in the history of mridanga. The famous ‘Korambu Mridanga Kalari’ of Irinjalakuda, has the credit of introducing mridangamela to the world of music. Mridanga mela was developed by the great maestro of Mridanga, late Korambu Subrahmanian Namboodiri, the founder of Korambu Mridanga Kalari, Irinjalakuda. Mridanga artists from Irinjalakuda have mesmerized venues across the world. According to Vikraman Namboodiri, "The bond with mridanga is more of an eternal bond sanctified by the divinity of music. A bond that is a lifelong commitment that shaped many lives in and around Irinjalakuda." Vikraman Namboodiri is one of the iconic figures of Irinjalakuda who is renowned across the globe for his contributions in the field of music. He has disciples spread over 10 nations and have taught over two thousand students during the past two decades. The fame of Irinjalakuda is set to grow as mridanga is receiving wide spread popularity in Middle East, Japan and in the European Union. The instrument have inspired many academic studies and research. </div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Bangalore city is known as the garden city. Bangalore City is also home to thousands of stray dogs. Vaccinated and neutered dogs are left with their ears cut to mark that their completed vaccination process. It also makes identification easier while capturing strays from the streets for rehabilitation. The process had been in place in the city for over two decades and animal rights activists have not efficiently responded against this. Stray dogs have been the zero cost solution to combat the rising volume of garbage disposed off on the city streets. The role of stray dogs had been crucial in combating garbage, rat infestation, diseases and crime rates. Stray dogs were found efficient to check these issues and have been an integral part of the city.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I came across a stray dog while I worked in the offshore unit of a Hollywood post production company in Bangalore. My work schedule was hectic and often I had to wait for the cab to pick me up and drop me home at odd hours of the day. I remember only one face that accompanied me during those one and a half year of my struggle. Often escorting me to the door step and chasing away strangers at 2 AM, I had a good friend. The stray was found more happy in the streets than at the comfort of the house. Soon I came across a community of them in the block I lived, in with each dog or two having command over a street. A hierarchy!! It was a fascinating system within the city. What shocked me the most was that each one were missing tips of their ear. It was so strange that it occured to almost every dog in the city. Then I realised who the culprits were, the species that were the most dangerous and uncivilized in the planet - Human beings.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">What is pathetic is that, the way we thank them for their services. Scars and disfigured dogs roam the city. Eating away decomposing garbage and chasing away strangers in the middle of the night. To many of Bangalore's working population who reach home late, the particular stray dogs present in the streets they live are common faces. At the cost a biscuit or two what is offered is a friendship for life. These dogs accompany civilians during their long walk from cab or while waiting for transportation at darkest hours. Cleaning the streets from rat infestation and garbage they serve the city more than any average citizen. The disfigured faces of these friends raise not just the question of morality but also what kind of city, ours is evolving into.</span></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Playing Cards at Municipal Ground, Irinjalakuda</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A wise person once said, "The world is as big as your heart can acknowledge." In all these years visiting Aiyyankavu Ground, what I find amusing is that, how this place resisted the change that took over Irinjalakuda. For many, Municipal ground is a flashback to our youth.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">From morning walks to never ending matches, this ground have seen it all. Apart from sports and practice sessions, this ground had become venue for cultural and social events that transformed the face of Irinjalakuda. </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Aiyyankavu ground is located in midst of the Municipality building and the Republic Park. The esteemed presence of this ground have invoked various cultural and sports activities in town. A generous gesture from the Aiyyankavu Temple that gifted the inhabitants of Irinjalakuda endless joy, these are what makes Irinjalakuda unique. But what makes the ground really special is that, this place is emotionally important for each individual of Irinjalakuda.</span><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The majestic lush field evokes memories for each person who had ever stepped into this field. Those moments chasing rings of cigarette smoke or the heat of a football game doesn't matter, all that matter is the passion and sweat that mixed with the soil of this ground. Each person has a reason to not forget this ground because this place is beyond time. The serene wind that cherishes the lush greenery is the same. The energy of youth that came and gone in this playground is the same. The lazy afternoons that stirred the soul, introspecting our decisions remains the same. The winds in this part of town can tell a thousand stories if you are willing to listen. Stories of new found hope, stories of broken hearts and stories of inspiring energy that transformed lives. As you keep walking to the center of this ground; when the ground is empty, the scene is altogether different. This place transforms into its spiritual self. A wave of calmness overtakes your soul setting your spirit free through the highways of your mind. A moment touching your life, a moment in which you can listen to your soul.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Some of my friends whom I shared my childhood in Irinjalakuda, ended up in different corners of the world. But upon reuniting in this ground we seemed to live backwards. Those far cry of cricket matches and football matches. Flipping cards searching for glory. Some actions that we deemed lazy ended up defining our lives giving us memories to cherish and recall. No matter which corner of the world we end up, we wander into this lush green field once again either enjoying the fragrance of this soil or in our evergreen memories.</span></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Memories about Irinjalakuda is intense as the colours of the town</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Each town is remembered for a reason. But Irinjalakuda can be remembered for a million reasons. Each street and alley share a special space in the memory lane. Each road is remarkable with its own history and landmarks. A list of roads starting from the legendary Pattamali Road, to the Iconic Puttungal Temple Road, the evergreen Chachu Chakkiyar Road and Kitta Menon Road, the icons and past are embedded in each corner of the town. Irinjalakuda is a town of legends and stories. Though commercialization and politics are poisoning the veins of the town, the immaculate beauty of the town fights its hard ground. Irinjalakuda is known for its rich harmonious atmosphere. One can travel throughout the town and find uniqueness in each corner of the town. The glorious past of the town coexists with the bright future that envelops the State of Kerala. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Each street of Irinjalakuda tells the story of a generation. The stories that has the fragrance of our childhood. Those stories when we roamed the town on our bicycles, occupying ourselves with cricket, football and exploring each corner of the town. Each road, each public space and each building will definitely have a unique story to tell you. Though most of the names, buildings and memories are fading in the passage of time, some are etched beyond eternity.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Land of Festivals</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Irinjalakuda has always been the land of cultural events and festivals. Not a month pass by without a celebration in this town. These celebrations and events have shaped the culture and tradition of this place. A few of the events stand apart due to the presence of domesticated elephants. Today I happened to witness an elephant being transported through the town. Tamed elephants had been a part of Indian Military history and culture. Vast number of domesticated elephants have been associated with festivals in Irinjalakuda. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Utsavam in the town attracts many ethusiasts due to the overwhelming presence of elephants assembled. Over the years, progressive steps had been taken to enhance the comfort and health of these gentle giants. Media and citizens played a significant role in preventing cruelty to these calm giants thereby improving their standard of living. The change had been overwhelming. This not only decreased the number of incidents of mishap but saved the elephants for unnecessary torture and routines. Being born in town and domesticated had rendered many of them unable to adapt to life in jungle. However studies and research conducted on domesticated elephants have been valuable in focusing on healthcare and treatment specifically to elephants. This had eventually led to saving numerous lives of elephants in the jungles and in towns. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A significant rise in the number of elephants have been achieved as a result. The rate of incidents of cruelty against animals have decreased to 87% compared the past decade. Still this has a long way to go along with rehabilitation of domesticated animals to where they actually belong to, without inflicting its impact upon the culture of the state. Kerala is also renowned for ayurvedic treatments provided for elephants. </span></div>
